The objective he was attempting to reach was enginewow > "the application of heat to the production of mechanical effect". But, even then, he was still doing the same mistake Dr. Hertzberg made, in thinking of single source engines. It was the duality they were all missing, dual temperatures like tornadoes.
Most engines suffer from crippling heat buildup. Not this engine. The H2O is in a constant, always-returning-to-state loop of being steam then being water. Liquid Air is cycling from ice cold to de-compressed. Each is in its own separate cycle except for when they meet together in the cylinder.
Their extremes of temperature cancel one another out -per each cycle- without a crippling heat buildup that leads combustion engines to inefficient operation. This engine, wow, does not lose efficiency over time. A tornado would run forever too if it received this kind of hot & cold refreshments.

My apologies for taking 44 months to present this new engine in a better html page. I never asked for a "miracle engine" because I never even considered any miracle engines existed. I just started researching engines, thinking that doing some Internet research would help take my mind off the months of pain from gout {sharp acid crystals in my bloodstream & joints}. I did not mean to start any Engine World War III.
Automobile engines already produced tons of engine heat so it seemed a secondary steam engine using that heat was in order. Then I came across a nitrogen air-powered prototype engine in some old ABC News articles online that told how one had passed muster successfully in 1997. So I dropped my steam hybrid idea to pursue this other engine. The U.S. Dept. of Energy had funded the Hertzberg project $360,000.00. So why don't you have it? What stopped the miracle engine?
Air is about 78% nitrogen so calling it an "air-powered engine" is basically still correct. Top Speed was @30 miles per hour so the engine -barely able to "beat its way out of a wet paper bag" as a car engine- was major Negative #1. The News Media made a big deal about it at first but the honeymoon ended when they had to "eat their words" after being told the top speed was slower than a gocart. The Dept. of Energy demanded the remainder of the research cash be given back. Dr. Hertzberg and his team of University of Washington students came very close to ending crude oil & engine combustion pollution.
The big Negative #2 after being so slow was how much electricity it would require to separate nitrogen "fuel" out of the atmosphere & then compress it. Most electricity is still produced from either crude oil or coal-burning generation so using more pollution=>producing electricity to save highway pollution was a zero gain. So the engine did run but the trade-offs were too many.
Negative #3: compressing a free gas like nitrogen -or just plain air- presses energy into the air -stored in the air- but the various squeezed molecules move more slowly, lowering the temperature. Air compresses into a cold liquid @Minus 320 Fahrenheit degrees. Such a supercold liquid injected directly into the engine cylinder would have flash frozen the piston to a dead stop, so Dr. Hertzberg had to devise a 2-step "workaround" to warm the liquid nitrogen.
His answer was to route the liquid nitrogen through an "economizer" borrowed from steam locomotives then passing through a heavy duty radiator before reaching the engine. As noted, it did work. That is what workarounds do. Unfortunately it also robbed the stored energy out of the liquid nitrogen. Compression = Energy In; Decompression = Energy Out. Energy is contained both in the positive-heat of steam and converse lack of heat in cold, a principle recognized by Count Rumford in 1798.
My answer to Negative #3 after 3 restless days of deliberation -and quite frankly SWEAT ON MY FOREHEAD- was to add hot steamed H2O into the engine cylinder so the cold air could be directly injected without freezing the piston metal to the cylinder wall and destroying the engine. All the compression-stored energy then went into the cylinder. This had the added benefit of solving Negative #1 => lack of go-cart speed. The solution to Negative #2 did not come quickly but, it did come within about 6 months, around the end of 2003. I began writing about this solution in the "icy hot" series of pages {links}.
Once a heavy 2,000 pound car or pickup truck is in motion on the highway it possesses Momentum, like if you were to swing a heavy maul around your head, like the Olympic "hammer throw". Friends, that is a lot of energy from a swinging 2,000 pound hammer. At road speeds that is a lot of raw Energy called Inertia. It is this inertia force that can be used to re-compress the air "on-the-fly", doing away with the polluting electricity needed by the original LN2000 engine.
It also translates into a car engine that can run forever on recycled un-altered molecules of air without need of any service stations for fuel. I recently wrote a 4-page Adobe pdf file named explainingBadwaterpdf that will give you an added overview of how this engine works as well as some history, plus how it led into my next miracle engine.
The original steam engines were toys thousands of years ago. Early scientists must have struggled for millenia to change the toy into a labor-saving working engine. The picture to the top right -& link- was obtained from research on How Stuff Works; it shows a working model animation and historical filler on Thomas Newcomen's first Physics Properties Solution to Steam Engines that began our current Industrial Age {I}. His injection of cold water made the steam cool suddenly, creating a vacuum reverse power that stepped up the return of the piston by collapsing the steam even though the metal cylinder was very hot.
It is with great respect I call Newcomen's engine and my engines -enginewow and Millenial Dawn- "God's Engines" because they are "Physics Properties for Fuel" engines using the combining of physical properties of Matter itself. They have a natural opposed interaction of liquid property behaviours that do not explode a one single fuel. In fact, it is the enginewow and Millenial Dawn engines that are the real "engines" where the "engine is the fuel".
The present engines of our Industrial Age I require exploding gasoline diesel or other flammable liquid. Engines such as these are the fake engines. Using exploding real fuel makes them fakes. One of the results of fakes is they put all of us in a hospital with asthma, emphysema and cancer. Using properties of Matter is imitation fuel, yet it is the "real" fuel in that they produce no pollution by-products.
Using engines that use Newcomen's physical property trick are set up, "contrived", staged and choreographed. But his engine was a flawed hybrid, with one foot in the water and one foot in the woodstove. My engines are the next step up to a 100% imitation fuel combination of two inert liquids air + steam => yielding 100% zero emissions engines => that raise us out of Industrial Age I into Industrial Age II, into the end of pollution-induced cancers and crippling chronic lung disease.
Crude oil and all its poison derivatives -gasoline, diesel- have of course been a one-energy stepping stone to the full Industrial Age II engines we can now have. But there are those who do not want to stop using them. They remove sulfur from diesel or add methane to diesel. These are good engines. But how can they possibly compare to having a car engine you just drive & drive & drive, without having to pay for fuel at all?
Both enginewow and Millenial Dawn do that. They do not use one-time chemical property real fuel but Physics Properties as imitation fuel. The liquid H2O water and compressed (liquid) air are not being destroyed so they are used in a 360 degree fully re-useable circle, much like the way an animal or human or weather cycle of the planet works, symbiotic co-helpers that work together as one system.
Is this what is called "Free Fuel" Engines? That is a misnomer I never use. While the fuel is free the engine systems are not. They have to be built, placed in car bodies, sold from a showroom floor just as normal as any other car. So Cost is still part of the equation, not some big universal FREE that makes salespeople shudder in fear. That kind of Free does not not yet exist.
Enginewow is more than a liquid air-powered system and it is more than a negative-steam, collapsing-steam engine. It is the two together in a dual-catalyst symbiotic implosion+explosion of Physical Property Synergy having more power than a gasoline combustion engine, once it gets built, an engine that has more power and costs much less money to fuel, operate & repair.
Which means you no longer have to suffer for lack of a raise on your job because the hole you stand in each payday got less deep... a "raise" via lower energy costs and home operating expenses that you can use to purchase hospitalization coverage.
Dr. Hertzberg was much older than me by the calendar. I cannot find his birth date but here places his graduation from Virginia Tech as 1943 & death as March 27, 2003, 3 months before I saw how to fix his engine by adding steam injection that allowed full power from the compressed air, which is awesome. That explains a lot regarding my negative relationship with VT from my inventions ending up in their graduate's back packs since 2003. That's too bad...
Anyway, he must have been 83YO when he passed away. His longtime dream was to make that engine replace gasoline. The idea originally came from a L'il Abner Sundays comic where the "Grandpa" had "invented" a car that ran off its own smog. It was called the smogmobile and it was real funny because all the Grandpa did was put a hose from the tailpipe to the carburetor.
Well, as a child I had read that same comic strip, so we both got the seed from there you might say. Laughter was a catalyst that burned into our brain a hope and faith of the ancients. With my lifetime of serious "accidents-accelerated" age, in some respects even tho chronologically older what we have here is one old man starting the project and another "old man" picking up the baton when the older Hertzberg fell in battle.
Some people notice dates religiously. Newcomen's 1705 patented engine -which was built and running by 1712- was followed by a lot of discoveries after 1800, Einstein in 1903-1905, and now my engines spanning 2003-2005. It looks like we old men badly bruised in battle are bringing home the imitation energy bacon, contrary to President Bush's ideas that youthful college student runners should be picking up the baton and winning the races while we old decrepit inventors take our rest.
They
can outrun me to the prom and outrun me to open doors for the girls, but
I fixed the engine and I claimed my right to call it right-now
-doable- desktop
fusion and to name the process Imitation
Energy. But, they are the ones getting the invention funding because
I don't have their connections or money "know-how". I
approached Virginia Tech once in 2002 with 3 of my engines {Wind
Engine, UFO
& Home Oxygen System},
offering them 80% if they would handle my engines; and they declined. I
approached Strategic Ventures of Charlotte and they backed away like I had
old man leprosy. So you dear people will get whatever the current energy
merchant czars say you will get, which may not be the winning engine
for you, just for their wallets.
